MONTREAL, Quebec, May 6, 2022 – The Women Presidents Organization (WPO), a peer advisory group for women entrepreneurs leading multi-million-dollar businesses, presented three awards to outstanding women business leaders at its 25th Annual Conference.
The Mary Lehman MacLachlan Economic Empowerment Award
This award is named for the esteemed WPO advisory board member who provided the seed capital to fund the start of the organization. Mary Lehman MacLachlan cared deeply about women in positions of leadership and business ownership and strongly believed women need to support other women in their communities. In her memory, this award is given each year to one WPO member who embodies economic independence by running a financially sound business, providing financial benefits for staff, and supporting other businesswomen in the community.
The 2022 Mary Lehman MacLachlan Economic Empowerment Award was presented to Victoria “Vicki” Vasques, Owner & Chairwoman of Tribal Tech LLC and member of the Platinum VIII WPO Chapter. Vicki is dedicated to helping other women business leaders reach new levels of economic success. She has assisted two business leaders, both also native women, in navigating Small Business Administration certification programs for their own companies, and has forged business partnerships with both. She is also the founder of the RMP Foundation, which she started in memory of her father, who was tribal chairman of her tribe and started the first education program on the reservation. The Foundation’s mission is to improve the education, health, and wellness of all people, especially those in our native communities. She tells other women interested in entrepreneurship: “start each day with both feet on the floor, pursue your passion, and take that step to start your own small business – no one can do it for you!”
The Adrienne Hall Award for Breaking Down Barriers
This award is named in honor of the WPO’s esteemed first board chair, Adrienne Hall, in honor of her efforts to foster the success and growth of the WPO by making connections that allowed the organization to break down barriers and facilitate greatness among its members. A strong advocate for women’s rights, Adrienne Hall started the first women-owned advertising company in the United States. The Adrienne Award is bestowed upon an individual in the WPO community who has gone above and beyond to collaborate with the WPO and forge relationships that have enhanced its mission and enriched its community.
The 2022 Adrienne Hall Award for Breaking Down Barriers was presented to Sheri Griffiths, Senior Vice President & Head, Greater Ontario Region, Corporate Finance, BMO. Sheri has been instrumental in the growth of the WPO and the advancement of women entrepreneurs in Canada, constantly connecting women business leaders to the resources, guidance, and local experts they need to grow their businesses, specifically in banking. She has always stepped up to support the WPO and its members, including a day-long summit for all Canadian WPO members before the 2022 annual conference in Montreal.
The President’s Award
The President’s Award recognizes WPO members who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to the WPO organization and their support of women business leaders. This award has the distinction of being personally selected by WPO CEO, Camille Burns.
The 2022 President’s Award was presented to Phyllis Newhouse, a serial entrepreneur and investor, retired military senior officer, and mentor. She is the Founder and CEO of Xtreme Solutions, Inc. and the Founder of ShoulderUp, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting and supporting women on their entrepreneurial journeys that she founded alongside Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis. And more recently, she co-founded Athena Technology Acquisition Corp., which closed a $250 million IPO in March 2021, making it the only SPAC listed on the NYSE with an African American female CEO. As a member of the Zenith chapter and the WPO Board of Directors, she has been a tireless advocate for women entrepreneurs and consistently uses her many connections to lift up women and support the WPO. As we celebrate 25 years of the WPO, she has been a steadfast supporter and champion of the organization and the power of peer learning to facilitate greatness in every member.
